Delta Region, SCCA - Zoom-Zoom II
Autocross
November 7, 2004

What do a beautiful fall day, a big open parking lot, and a course
designer with a lot of cones at his disposal have in common? That would
be Zoom-Zoom II! Event Chairperson, Benson Young, wove all the threads
together on November 7, 2004, to make a great event for Delta Region’s
first fall outing at Zephyr Stadium on Airline Drive, in Metairie, LA.
His course design was slightly different than one he designed for that
venue earlier this year making the average timed run between 45 – 50
seconds. The 91 drivers, 21 of them running in novice classes,
initially found the course a bit of a challenge. With 4 runs each,
everyone “got it” by the end of the day.
Patty
Poupart ran this event in her 2004 Z06 Corvette which she campaigned in
the SS class. There was only one other competitor in this class
and the lead was passed back and forth a couple of times. At the
end of the day, Patty finished in 2nd place, only .151 seconds behind
Ron Randolph in a 2002 Z06 Corvette. This was the first autocross
outing for the Z06 and it was awesome! The responsiveness and
handling of the Corvette seem to be magnified in the Z06. For
Patty, autocrossing a Corvette on street tires is VERY different than
being in a B-Prepared Corvette on slicks!
We’ll be
back at Zephyr Stadium on December 5th with a top notch course being
designed by Robbie Poupart that promises to be a lot of fun no matter
what you drive.
